Today is Feb. 3rd, 2016, the 25th day of the twelfth month in Chinese lunar calendar, the day of welcoming the Jade Emperor.

According to the old customs, it is considered that after the Kitchen God ascends to heaven on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month, Jade Emperor will descend to earth in person on the 25th day of this month to inspect people’s good and evil so as to determine their weal and woe in the coming year. Therefore, every household holds a worship ceremony for his blessing on the day, which is known as welcoming the Jade Emperor. On this day, with caution in their daily lives and speeches, people strive to behave well so as to gain Jade Emperior’s favor and to be blessed next year.

In Chinese ancient myth and legend, Jade Emperor is an extremely special heavenly god, the leader of all gods in Heaven Realm. Besides commanding all Heavens and Heavenly gods of ten directions in the three realms, Jade Emperor also administers rise and fall, fortune and misfortune as well as weal and woe of everything in the universe. He has great influences on the folk belief in Han Nationality.

Among the populace, the standard of folk worshiping ceremony for him usually surpasses that for the Triple Purity (three top gods), which is much grander than other general gods’.

Here are several questions to be answered.

Does the Jade Emperor exist or not?

Answer: Yes, he does.

Is the Jade Emperor the same as what was described in Taoist classics or not?

Answer: Not completely the same.

Is the Jade Emperor the same as what was described in mythic legend or not?

Answer: Not completely the same.

Is the Jade Emperor the leader of all gods in the Heaven Realm?

Answer: Not exactly.

Is the Jade Emperor the dominator of the universe?

Answer: No, he isn’t.

Should we revere him?

Answer: Yes, we should.

Is it right to worship the Jade Emperor by offering him wine and meat?

Answer: Absolutely wrong.

The Jade Emperor never eats pig’s head.

According to the folk-custom in my hometown, people worship the Jade Emperor by offering him pig’s head. People say that pig’s head is the Jade Emperor’s favorite food even with vivid detailed description.

The Jade Emperor is a purified and venerable god. How could he like eating pig’s head?

The Jade Emperor is very honorable, very imperatorial and very powerful in the universe. He strictly complies with Law of Universe, Rule of Nature and Truth of Science. He commands gods of heaven and earth, practices moralities, implements Heaven’s mandates, safeguards heavenly commandments, supervises principles of underworld, adjusts Yin-Yang, rewards the virtuous and punishes the wicked, and protects all things and beings of ten directions in the three realms.

Although there is no textual research of Jade Emperor’s deeds, his merits and virtues have been deep into our hearts.

Populace’s feelings towards the Jade Emperor are quite complicated, including reverence, respect, expectation, plea, resentment and so on.

Populace commonly call the Jade Emperor as God-lord (Lao Tianye), Heavenly Grandfather (Tian Laoye), Heavenly Father (Tian Gong), Heaven (Cang Tian), Top Heaven (Shang Cang) and so on. Those appellations are very friendly.

However, they also curse him in such an impolite way, “Heavenly Grandfather grows no eyes.”; “Heavenly Grandfather, please open your eyes!”; “Heavenly Grandfather, are you blind?”; “No equality in front of the Heaven!”

It’s not an easy work for Jade Emperor, the respected god. He has no other choice but to listen to people’s praise or blame, jeer or criticism, because he is a responsible god of down-to-earth style.

The Jade Emperor is not a clay idol or wooden statue placed high in a shrine for worship. He is our family, our loved one, the patron saint carefully protecting us. He is paying compassionate attention to every universal being at any moment. He is devoting himself to all creatures silently at any moment. He is dedicated to the operation of the universe at any moment.

Here is a poem to prove this point:

With a cup of tea, I pay homage to the Jade Emperor.

His merits and virtues of balancing Yin-Yang are boundless.

Where is this venerable god? You may ask.

I will be smilingly watching waves of the Milk Way.

Let’s end today’s conversation with this poem.
